Imagine the place where art, science and the human body intersect: that’s the idea behind Pulse: Art and Medicine, the fascinating exhibit that presents a multimedia investigation of medicine as an inspiration for new artworks and art forms.
Germs as art? Well, that’s part of it. According to Strathmore Fine Art curator Harriet Lesser, “From before DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man, areas of medicine have influenced aesthetic perceptions. This show, from Luke Jerram’s blown glass bacteria to Bruce Peebles’ wooden double helix installation to Satre Stuelke’s X-Ray scans of common objects, Pulse presents an ever-expanding scope of how something so essential to our daily lives can also be a source of artistic inspiration.”

China Blue is an artist who captures the tenor of our times by transforming common electronic waste into biomimetic artwork with an environmental focus that also sings. In Firefly Tree, one of her works shown at AC Institute, she translates the firefly’s rhythmic signaling pattern into sound (the Firefly Chorus) and light (blinking LEDs). Today fireflies are threatened due to habitat encroachment and light pollution, making memories of fireflies more precious as the illumination of the cities and towns overwhelm their delicate mating light show.

The Academy of Natural Sciences was the first in the world to create a mounted dinosaur skeleton for display, and to this day the Academy is known as “the dinosaur museum.” Drawn to Dinosaurs: Hadrosaurus foulkii is an intimate exhibit that reveals the science and art of visualizing a living animal based on fragmentary fossils. The centerpiece is a full cast of the plant-eating duckbill dinosaur Hadrosaurus foulkii, discovered in 1858 in Haddonfield, N.J., by an Academy member and later reconstructed by the artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins based on Academy research.

This new art gallery sponsored by the Nature Conservancy illuminates the story of Arizona’s forests — 4 million acres overgrown and prone to intense, damaging fires — and the efforts made to restore them to health. The exhibit also explores the important role of Arizona forests in the Phoenix watershed and explains the collaborative Four Forest Restoration Initiative, the largest forest thinning project ever with 300,000 acres treated over the next 10 years. Small diameter trees similar to the ones being thinned are even part of the gallery’s design, with dividing walls constructed from oriented strand board.
