**NEW**D.C. Art Science Evening Rendezvous (Washington, DC) October 20, 2011; 6pm | Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences (CPNAS) presents D.C. Art and Science Evening Rendezvous (DASER), a monthly discussion forum on art and science projects in the national capital region. DASERs provide the public with a snapshot of the cultural environment of the region and foster interdisciplinary networking. This series is organized in collaboration with Leonardo, the International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology.SCIART EXHIBITS**NEW**Highstead (Redding, CT): Sept. 10, 2011-Oct. 28, 2011 | Nature’s Remedies: Plants and Animals | Annual show of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators Greater New York Chapter. Over 40 paintings highlighting the medicinal values of plants and animals in folklore, traditional medicine and natural remedies on display now through October 28. Exhibit can be viewed by appointment, Monday through Friday, from 8:30am until 4:00pm.**NEW**Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, Sant Ocean Hall Focus Gallery (Washington, DC): Sept. 3, 2011-Jan. 8, 2012 | The Bright Beneath: The Luminous Art of Shih Chieh Huang | Artist Shih Chieh Huang spent a good part of 2007 exploring specimens of deep-ocean animals found in the collections of the National Museum of Natural History. He was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow and was investigating the unusual evolutionary adaptations that allow these creatures to live in environments unthinkable to humans. One adaptation, called bioluminescence, inspired Huang to create haunting installations that will be suspended in the Sant Ocean Hall Focus Gallery in a temporary exhibition.**NEW**The University of Wisconsin-Madison Ebling Library for the Health Sciences (Madison, WI): Sept. 16, 2011-Jan. 31, 2012 | Beyond the Edge of the Sea | In the darkest reaches of the Earth’s oceans live a multitude of strange and wondrous creatures. Artist Karen Jacobsen has captured the essence of these creatures in watercolor illustrations and vivid landscape paintings. Her work is featured for the first time ever in Beyond the Edge of the Sea, which represents the culmination of a collaboration between artist and deep-sea scientist and explorer, Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover.
The Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, MD): Sept. 17, 2011-Dec. 11, 2011 | Puzzles of the Brain: An Artist's Journey through Amnesia | The Walters will partner with the Cognitive Science Department in the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts & Science at The Johns Hopkins University in an innovative focus show exploring the impact of severe brain damage on an artist.
SUNY Upstate Medical University, Health Sciences Library (Syracuse, NY): Sept. 2011-Nov. 2011 | The Sweet-voiced Bird Has Flown:
Portraits of Common Birds in Decline | This exhibition explores birds that are experiencing population declines. Each of the 20 artists has created a color painting and a monochrome sketch of a bird species. The painting shows the bird in its natural, undisturbed habitat. The sketch shows the same species with the environmental pressure that has caused its decline. The exhibit is funded in part by the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.
San Francisco Art Institute (Atlanta, GA): Sept. 22, 2011-Nov. 13, 2011 | Think Art - Act Science | Transforming the Walter and McBean Galleries into a working lab, Think Art – Act Science is composed of artists who took part in the Swiss artists-in-labs program, completing an immersive residency in a scientific research institute or university science department. Featured artists are Alexandre Joly, Christian Gonzenbach, Pe Lang, Wenfeng Liao, Alina Mnatsakanian, Monica Codourey, and Roman Keller. The exhibition is arranged around three main themes: Ecology and Environment, Spatial Awareness and Emotions, and Exploration of New Technologies.
Fernbank Museum of Natural History (Atlanta, GA): Sept. 24, 2011-Jan. 1, 2012 | Darwin: Selections | In celebration of Darwin, Fernbank Museum has partnered with local artists and scientists to present a collection of illustrations, paintings and drawings that reveal the relationship between science and art. These eight Atlanta- and Athens-based artists, typically employed to create teachable science through literal imagery, reveal the evolution of art from science in this inspiring exhibition that recognizes the beauty of the natural world.
