Often the highest calling for an artist can be to describe humanity’s place in the world. So when a 419-million year old fish makes the news, it not only gives us another look at where we came from, it reminds us that the very best scientific illustration makes visible things which we can no longer see.

    This is a wonderful reminder of the actual role of our own species in the story of the planet, and that when we finish messing the world up, other forms of life will exist on into whatever future there may be.
