Since I couldn’t bring you all with me to the amazing Google Science Fair Finalist Gala on 23 September, I’m posting the video here. The age-category winners are Viney Kumar, 14, for his work on a signalling system for emergency vehicles in the 13-14-year-old category; Ann Makosinski, 16, for her work in creating a batter-free flashlight, in the 15-16-year-old group; and Eric Chen, 17, for his work in developing anti-flu medicines, for the 17-18-year-olds. Elif Bilgin, 16, won the Scientific American Science in Action Award as well as the Voter’s Choice Award.
I was the chief judge, a role I’ve had since the Google Science Fair launch in 2011, and I also separately run our Scientific American Science in Action awards judging since we started that program last year. In the video below, my bit comes at about 29:18, and the lovely video of our Scientific American Science in Action winner, Elif Bilgin, starts at about 31:40.
